Olde Colony Bakery holds what's said to be the only surviving original Benne Wafer recipe, a formula more than a century old for the toasted sesame cookie that's become a Charleston signature. Benne, the West African word for sesame, arrived in the Lowcountry with enslaved Africans during the colonial era, and Olde Colony has kept that heritage alive from its Mount Pleasant bakery since 1940.
