A rice with a story that spans three centuries and two continents. Charleston Gold Rice is a hybrid between Carolina Gold Rice and a long-grain variety, grown and milled by Marsh Hen Mill on Edisto Island, SC. Legend has it that the ancestor of this rice arrived in Charleston in 1685 when the captain of a merchant ship paid for harbor repairs with rice seed from Madagascar. The rice that grew from those seeds changed the Lowcountry forever.
Charleston Gold is well known for its golden hue in the fields, its distinctive floral aroma, and a warm, nutty flavor that sets it apart from both standard long-grain rice and its Carolina Gold parent. It cooks up light and separate, with just enough personality to make plain rice feel like an event.
Perfect for:
- Classic Lowcountry dishes: pilaf, red rice, and hoppin' john
- Serving alongside Sea Island Red Peas for an authentic Gullah-Geechee combination
- Using as a fragrant base for shrimp, fish, and seafood dishes
- Finishing with a drizzle of Lowcountry Herb Infused Olive Oil in place of butter
- Making rice salads and grain bowls that benefit from a nutty, floral note
- Serving as a premium side dish for any occasion where plain rice feels insufficient
Great as a gift for:
- Food historians, heritage grain enthusiasts, and serious home cooks
- Anyone who loves a good food origin story
- Charleston visitors and Lowcountry transplants who want a taste of home
- Pair with Carolina Gold Rice and Sea Island Red Peas for a complete Lowcountry grain gift
